I’ve made many variations of cabbage-based soups over the years, and this one continues to stand out for its flavor and simplicity. Using familiar ingredients like ground beef, canned vegetables, and pantry spices keeps the process simple, while Worcestershire sauce and garlic help build that rich, savory flavor people expect from a good hamburger soup.

From a practical nutrition standpoint, this recipe balances protein, vegetables, and broth in a way that’s both filling and realistic for everyday meals. It comes together quickly, uses one pot, and it’s kid-friendly!

How to Make Cabbage Soup with Hamburger

This is one of my favorite comfort foods on a cold night! To make this recipe, you will need a large pot or Dutch oven. Simply follow my step-by-step below or scroll to the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.

  1. Start by browning the ground beef in a large dutch oven or stock pot over medium heat. Then drain off the grease.
  2. Next, add the onion, carrots, celery, and garlic. Then sauté the mixture, stirring occasionally for 5-6 minutes.
  3. Now, add the drained and rinsed green beans, fire roasted tomatoes and spices, stir to combine. Then add the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir in the cabbage.
  4. Now you can cover and reduce the heat to low, allow the soup to cook 15-20 minutes or until the cabbage reaches your desired tenderness. Then you’re ready to serve!

Storage and Reheating Instructions

Reheating Instructions: This hamburger soup reheats well in the microwave. Reheat in 30-second increments until warmed to your desired level. My preferred method is to reheat in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally. To reheat frozen soup, remove it from the freezer and let it thaw in the fridge overnight. Then follow the directions above.

Storage Instructions: Prior to storing this soup, allow it to cool completely. Then you can store it in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze it for up to 3 months in a freezer safe container.
